FLOATING INSPIRATION
Ivan’s Childhood - Andrei Tarkovsky
A golden hoop has been lifted into the sky. A golden hoop filled with artistic and deeply human ability. Imagination, play, forms, and more live in this hoop, and was created in the expanse of the week at the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium (GLMCC). I along with several others brought the hoop down to lay within the space, fed and contributed to this power, and at the very end we all picked it up and lifted it back into the sky, granting us inspiration throughout the year whenever we wish to call upon it.
My time at GLMCC is over, and I’m already feeling the weight of firey desire engrossing me, wanting to step right back into that space to play once again. I used to play video games as a kid, and whenever there was a game that I was obsessed with, I’d think about it during classes, lunch, I’d be playing four square and thinking about it. I’d be on the bus and the anticipation would grow so much that I’d be at the edge of my seat ready to sprint from the bus stop home. Now I have to wait a year to go back to GLMCC.
The space provided for me safety, joy, broken hearts, exploded hearts, drunken stupor’s, and a blue balloon for a butt. Some things were imaginary, some things were the foundation. The power of the imagination to create for the character, the power to step in and step out. The amount of thresholds we crosses together, the energy within the space. I miss it so much already. So I take this, and I let myself understand that I can take all of that with me.
That golden hoop we’ve sent up into the sky carries all of that. It shines brightly down on you and inspires you whenever you need it, it breaks and parts dark clouds, and radiates and reflects the amount of work you’ve put into the space when you were there for only a week, for 12 hour days. I’m aching to get to the next show, but right now is where I get to digest. Right now I get the time to spend time reviewing and reflecting. I’ll continue my marathon prep, I’ll continue my schedule, and I’ll step into my career with a great deal more power than I had before. This past week I gained tools, clarity, practice, example, mentorship, friends, and community. I am deeply grateful, and I can’t wait to see everyone again and to bring that hoop down once more to get a closer look at how it’s grown throughout my year as a professional in the world.
